The Tesserarius is equivalent to an NCO in modern ranks and was very similar to (although below) the Optio as the third officer in a Centurai. His primary duties was being the watch commander - commanding the nightly watch and the watchwords from command. In battle he preformed very similar duties as the Optio being on the other side of the formation in some cases keeping legionaries in line.
